Search Results
❓Some files or folders seem to be missing
Expand your search using the * wildcard → e.g.,
*report*instead ofreportIf using operators (
AND,OR,NOT), check that they are applied and grouped correctly. When searching for a specific field name, verify that both the field name and value are spelled correctly and respect case sensitivity.
Check for active filters — a number badge on the filter icon means filters are on. Open filters and click Clear filters.
Make sure Current Dir is OFF. If it is ON, Diskover only searches the folder you are currently viewing, not everything.
Verify that no specific index is selected that could be limiting results. Go to ⚙️ → Indices and check Always use latest indices is enabled.
Try refreshing: ⚙️ → Reload Indices.
❓ Too many results are coming back
Avoid overusing the * wildcard — it matches everything and can return thousands of unrelated results.
Check if predictive search is ON in ⚙️ Settings. If enabled, Diskover automatically adds * wildcard to every search. Turn it OFF for more precise results.
Try searching within a specific field name to narrow results → e.g.,
name:reportinstead of justreportUse filters to add constraints on size, date, file type, or owner.
Use Current Dir to limit results to just the folder you are currently viewing.
❓ Files were added recently but are not showing in Diskover
Diskover works from index snapshots — files added after the last index was created won't appear until the next scan runs.
While waiting for indexing: use File Action → Live View to browse the directory in real-time and copy paths as needed.
⚠️ Live View must be activated and configured. Contact your System Administrator if you don't see this option. |
❓ I can only see files — or only directories — not both
Open filters and check the Doc type setting. Set it to all to see both files and directories.
Alternatively, use the search bar with:
(type:file or type:directory)
❓ The green bar shows thousands of results, but I can only see a few
By default, only 10 results per page are shown. Increase this up to 1,000 using the items-per-page selector above the results pane.
If there are more than 1,000 results, use the page navigation arrows to move between pages.
❓ My search is returning everything, even things that don't match what I typed
Predictive search may be ON in ⚙️ Settings. This automatically appends a * wildcard to every search. Turn it OFF to get exact matches only.
❓ My filters are still active even though I closed the filter panel
Saved filters stay active until you manually clear them — closing the panel does not turn them off.
Look for a number badge on the filter icon on the search page. If you see a number, filters are active.
To remove them: open Filters → click Clear.
⚠️ Active filters affect all your searches and browsing until cleared. If results seem unexpectedly limited, check for active filters first. |
❓ I lost my location / path while drilling down
Your current path is always shown in the Path Bar — just below the green info bar. Click any part of the path to jump back to that location.
The green info bar also shows your active path and search criteria at all times.
❓ How do I export search results?
Click the Export button on the search page to export results as CSV or JSON, or to copy file paths.
❓ How do I share search results with a colleague?
Use the Share button to copy a URL link to your current results, or copy the search query itself for repeatable searches.
Your colleague must also have access to Diskover to open a shared link.
❓ How do I do complex sorting of results?
Change the primary and/or secondary sort in your Results Pane.
For advanced multi-column sorting across large datasets, export to CSV and use Excel or a similar tool.
User Interface
❓My settings reset / I lost my settings
Settings are saved as cookies in your browser — they are browser-specific and not tied to your account.
If you switch browsers (e.g., Chrome to Safari), you will need to reselect your settings in the new browser.
Settings may also reset after a software update, or if you manually clear your Diskover cookies.
❓ The interface is frozen / spinning wheel that won't stop
Do not use the browser Back button or ESC key — these usually won't help.
Instead, click any icon in the top menu bar — this often breaks the wait cycle.
If that doesn't work, do a hard browser refresh → Windows: Ctrl + F5 | Mac: Cmd + Shift + R
❓ The interface looks or behaves abnormally
If this happened after a software update, first try: ⚙️ → Reload Indices
If the issue persists, try these steps in this order:
◦ Hard refresh your browser → Windows: Ctrl + F5 | Mac: Cmd + Shift + R
◦ Clear the Diskover cache: ⚙️ Settings → Clear Diskover Cache
◦ Clear your Diskover cookies: ⚙️ Settings → Clear Diskover Cookies (note: this resets your settings)
◦ Log out and log back in
❓ My columns look different / columns are missing or out of order
Column visibility in the Results Pane is controlled in ⚙️ Settings → Hide/Unhide Fields.
⚠️ Checked boxes mean hidden — the reverse of what you might expect. Uncheck a box to make that column visible. |
Column order can be manually changed by dragging and dropping a column where you want.
You can apply primary and secondary sort to your columns.
❓ Times and dates look wrong
By default, Diskover shows times in UTC. Go to ⚙️ Settings → Time Display and select Show times in local timezone to match your local time.
❓ Copied file paths don't work on my computer
If you are on Windows and the path uses forward slashes (/), or vice versa, go to ⚙️ Settings → Path Translations and configure the correct format for your OS.
Contact your System Administrator if you are unsure which path format to use.
❓ A folder I know exists is not showing in the left pane
The left pane only shows directories that contain data—empty directories do not appear in the file tree—they will only show up in the Results pane.
Indices
❓ I can't select a specific index
Go to ⚙️ Settings → Indices and make sure Always use latest indices is unchecked. When this option is on, manual index selection is disabled.
❓ I don't see all my indices in the list
Diskover limits how many indices load at once for performance reasons. On the Indices page, find the Max indices to load field and increase the number.
Indices are ordered by creation date — older ones may not appear until you increase this limit.
🔆 This is a per-user setting saved as a browser cookie — it won't affect other users. |
❓ Indexing seems to take a long time
Large storage volumes naturally take longer to index, even with Diskover's optimized parallel scanning.
Some storage hardware scans faster than others — newer systems are generally quicker.
If performance seems unusually slow, report it to your System Administrator — there may be a backend issue.
❓ I need data scanned more frequently
The indexing schedule is set by your System Administrator. Contact them to request more frequent scans of specific volumes.
Analytics
❓ The Heatmap report won't load or shows an error
The Heatmap requires two indices to be selected before opening it.
⚠️ Your index selections stay active until you change them. To go back to normal searching, return to Indices and re-enable Always use latest indices. |
❓ The Heatmap is showing everything in red (massive apparent growth)
If Show new dirs is enabled, directories that didn't exist in the older index appear as large red blocks — this can dominate the view.
Toggle Show new dirs OFF if new directories are not what you are investigating.
❓ The User Analysis or Cost Analysis report shows no data
These reports require setup by your System Administrator. If you see nothing, contact your admin to confirm the reports are enabled and properly configured.
Tags
❓ The tag button doesn’t work
You need to select at least one item in the Results pane for the Tag button to be enabled.
❓ I can't add or edit tags
Editing and creating tags requires an admin account. If you need changes, contact your System Administrator.
