Manual Tagging Overview
Tags are metadata attached to files or folders, adding business context. They make your data easier to organize, find, and manage, and can also trigger automated data curation actions such as archiving or deletion.
This chapter covers manual tagging. System Administrators can also configure AutoTags, which apply policy-driven tags automatically—usually for data hygiene or lifecycle management.
✏️ Your login permissions determine whether you can apply or edit tags.

How to Apply Tags
Single Tag Application
✏️ A file or directory can have multiple tags.
Select the item(s) you want to tag.
Open the Tag menu and choose the tag you want to apply.
Non-Recursive and Recursive Tag Application
✏️ If a directory has multiple tags, the action will propagate all its tags during a recursive or non-recursive application. See F in the Manual Tagging Overview section for more details.
If not already done, open the Tag menu and choose a tag to apply to the selected folder(s)—you need to tag the main folder first in order to tag recursively or non-recursively.
Reselect the same folder(s).
-
Open the Tag menu → Apply tags to → Selected folders → select your preferred recursively or non-recursively option.
How to Remove Tags
✏️ Removing tags follows the same logic as applying them—just in reverse.
Single Tag Removal
Select the item(s).
Open the Tag menu.
Select the tag you want to remove, or choose Remove all tags if the item has only one tag.
Multiple Tags Removal
Select the item(s).
Open the Tag menu.
Select Remove all tags
Recursive and Non-Recursive Tags Removal
Select the folder(s).
Remove the tag(s) from that directory first (using the steps above).
Reselect the same directory.
Open the Tag menu → Apply tags to → Selected folders → select your preferred recursive or non-recursive option.
Tags Report
You can find the details under Analytics → Tags.
How to Search on Tags
There are several ways to find items based on their tags:
Use Filters to narrow results by tag.
Use the tag Field Name in the search bar; for example:
tags:delete.Type
#in the search bar to show a list of all available Tags. Clicking one opens its results in the search page—it does not open the Analytics view.
